Rivals ask EU for action on Microsoft
Google Inc. has joined other web browsers fighting with the European Union to make Microsoft Corp. provide a chance for new computer consumers to choose their main web browser. Microsoft currently has Internet Explorer as the default internet browser on new personal computers.
Google along with Firefox browser’s developers, Opera Software ASA and Mozilla Corp. want it to be easier for consumers to choose a different internet browser.
Microsoft has offered to put a ballot on Internet Explorer so the consumer can choose their personal browser.
Google and its fellow protestors think that putting a ballot on the default browser will not make a difference because Internet Explorer is already there.
In July, Microsoft accepted a demand from the EU that it provide a choice. Microsoft has already been fined so it is in its best interest to settle with the unhappy browsers.
I think this is a good idea. I didn’t know how to get a different internet browser on my personal computer until I took a computer class and my instructor showed me. I prefer a browser other than Internet Explorer but, for the longest time I didn’t know I had an option. Providing a choice would defiantly be in the best interest of the consumer.

I didn't even know we had a choice. Although I've known of firefox, I never thought about it as another choice. Internet Explorer just always seemed like the only thing to choose from.
ReplyDeleteI think this is awesome. I personally love using firefox and would choose it any day over internet explorer. They are probably realizing that forcing the consumer to use what they want them to use, will only make them dislike the company doing so in frustration. Plus, if people are choosing not to use internet explorer, than it shows them perhaps they need to improve their software.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion it all comes down to two peole: the lazy or the ignorant and sometimes both. What I'm getting at is that some people don't realize that obtaining a new web browser really isn't that hard. You either have to look for it or know people who already have it and ask questions. Installation is really simple and quick.
ReplyDeleteI just find it odd that Google and FireFox are demanding that another web browser already be installed in the OS before a consumer buys it. To me that means they want money because they have to sell their browser to Microsoft in order to have it preinstalled. Google and Firefox are free internet items and they should stay that way. Sure, IE is too but it comes with Windows and how do you get windows (and don't say pirate it, you're just going to have to reinstall yet another OS when something corrupts it)?
I guess this is a good idea. I guess I knew that different browsers were available but I just never thought to change because I am comfortable using Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer meets all my needs and I have no qualms with it so I never thought to try anything different and I don't think I will in the future.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I like Internet Explorer. I understand the contoversy with other web browsers not being able to display as someone's home page, but what's the big deal? I thought Internet Explorer was the default setting to all computers, no? I know when I use other computers that are set to Mozilla Fire Fox or something other than Explorer default I get flustered because it's not what I'm use to.
