Student must pay $675k for songs
I don't know how I feel about this story. I can see both sides of the argument (record label and student). The defending attorney made a good point when he said, this is a generation of kids who don't think downloading free music is wrong. I agree with this idea. I am a part of this generation of music pirates and I did not know that it was wrong until a year ago. I know many people that still don't think they can get in trouble for it.On the other hand, I understand how this has had a crippling effect on the music industry. I agree that they should be paid for their work.
although, I think that this student was made into an example for the rest of the music pirates. I think the punishment was a little too harsh.
I do agree that the illegal pirating of music needs to stop but, I think that the record companies should be going after the people who are creating the "peer sharing" sites; not the individuals using the site.
This is a tuff issue to discuss because I agree that payment must be paid in full to those who make the music yet I feel that this kid is being punished harshly. Then again, how else can the law get the message across?
ReplyDeleteThis article made me so mad!!! I agree that if they want to put the ringer on someone it should be the people who create and run the p2p networks. This guy couldn't have downloaded that much music to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees to the music industry!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I could care less that the music industry has seen it's sales decrease. Talented artists are still able to make a living recording music, which if it's their passion, should be enough. The music execs will still get paid, maybe less, but enough to live quite comfortably. Why are we so concerned with these rich guys supposedly not getting their due?
When Napter went down that's when I stopped file sharing and dling music for free. I suggest if you want to listen to music for free try imeem.com because they have free browser streaming with COMPLETE songs. How do they do this? Advertisement or some other means to make money by not charging the user. However, only down side is that the artist can demand imeem to shorten any of their songs to 30 seconds. Hey, it beats jail time for downloading a Kanye West ablum rofl.
